  The food here is good and atmosphere outside is romantic. I would say these are the only two pluses. The inside is slightly claustrophobic and hallways very narrow and cramped seating. Because they have no real music or ambient noise if you are outside (usually the case as that's where most of the seating is) and are joined by one or two other nearby tables, you can pretty much hear everything that is said including piercing raucous laughter.
  
  The waitstaff the few times I've went is not very knowledgeable about the menu as a couple times I've asked about something I ordered in the past and no one knew what it was (this is obviously more lack of training, but more than any other restaurants I have distinct memories of one rude waiter and one rude waitress here - maybe it's because it's Birmingham? but to happen twice at the same place is interesting). Would give Cafe Via one star if it wasn't for the excellent food, very light and not heavy like many other restaurants...and good portions.

  Have been to Cafe Via many times and can only speculate about why there has been a perceptible change in the quality of both food and service. Have ordered the burger here many times with no complaints until tonight. Both times overcooked. At best medium well when ordered medium rare. Might not seen like a significant difference to some, but when paying $15 for a hamburger, they should at least get the temperature right. After bringing the second burger, the waiter disappeared for at least 15 minutes. As the rest of the family was long done eating, we just told him to forget about it. The waiter came back and said we wouldn't need to pay for the burger as if he was doing us a favor. Apparently, the so-called chef in the kitchen said the burger was cooked correctly. Have never ever had this experience. Ever. So bad, in fact, I felt compelled to right my first online review of any restaurant in my life. The manager was pretty much invisible until I asked to talk to him after paying the bill. At that point he was pretty much useless, which may explain in part the deteriorating quality of both food and service.
